FAQ

Yarn Questions

What do I need to know about hand dyed yarn?

If you’ve never worked with hand dyed yarns before, the most important thing to know and remember is that no two skeins will be exactly alike, even if they were dyed together.

If your project calls for more than one skein of the same colorway, then I recommend alternating between skeins every couple of rows for smoother color transition.

What yarn bases do you offer?

The following are a list of the yarn bases I offer in order by yarn weight. I'll be adding more over time so be sure to sign up for my newsletter and follow me on Instagram for updates!

How will my yarn arrive?

Your yarn will arrive in the form of a hank or a twisted skein with a label wrapped around it. The yarn label will include important yarn care information so be sure to save it.

The yarn will be twisted and tied in several areas in order to keep it from tangling. When you’re ready to begin your project, you’ll need to cut these ties before winding the yarn into a ball or cake. Please take care that you do not accidentally cut the yarn.

The yarn MUST be wound into a ball or cake before you knit or crochet. If you do not wind it, it will become a tangled mess. Save yourself the hassle and frustration.

What is the difference between fingering weight yarn and sock weight yarn?

Aside from the names, there really isn't any difference within this weight class. People just call this yarn weight different things.

What varies is the fiber compositions of each hank/skein of yarn and the treatment of the yarn (superwash / non-superwash).

If you're looking for yarn to knit socks, it doesn't have to say "sock yarn" specifically. Most fingering weight yarns can be used but, wool/nylon blends, like our Capital Sock and Truly Twisted, tend to wear better and last longer over time.

How should I care for my yarn?

Each skein you purchase will come with a yarn label which will list its fiber composition and any instructions specific to that yarn.

At the moment, I offer 100% Superwash Wool and Superwash Wool / Nylon blends. To care for these yarns, you can wash them in your washing machine on cold, delicate setting, and lay flat to dry.

However, I recommend hand washing your finished projects in cold water with just a little dish detergent, like Dawn, or your favorite wool wash. Squeeze out any excess water in a towel and lay flat to dry. Hand washing will allow it last longer and stay looking new.

Why does my yarn color look different from the picture?

All of our yarns are dyed in a small batch process. Even though we work to a recipe, the dyeing process will produce different results each and every time, and will look different from one fiber to the next. The uniqueness of each is part of the beauty of hand dyed yarns.

Unless you receive the exact skein that was photographed, each yarn will have its own color variation. Additionally, computer monitor colors can vary greatly. Finally, in rare cases, some skeins may have been re-skeined (rewound) in order to correct tangling and/or improve appearance. Most will not have been reskeined and may show blocks or sections of color until it is wound or caked for use.

Will my yarn colors bleed?

I do everything I can to ensure that your hand dyed yarn won't bleed. The yarn is dyed in professional quality acid dyes, heat treated, stabilized, and washed thoroughly.

However, it’s normal for your yarn to bleed a little the first couple of washes, especially if your yarn is a rich or dark color.

As you care for your yarn, keep in mind that different things can affect the dye like water pH, chemicals in the water, and/or the temperature of the water.

With that said, I recommend that you:

  • wash your yarn in COLD water;
  • with a little dish soap or wool wash;
  • AND 1tbsp of white vinegar or citric acid.

This will help preserve the colors.

Where are your wool yarns sourced from?

With the exception of our Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) wool, all of our Merino wool comes from various farms in South America. Our BFL is grown in the UK and is 100% British.

ALL of our wool comes from well-loved and well-cared for flocks. They are all mulesing-free.

Do you offer custom-dye orders?

I don't currently accept custom dye orders but I hope to in the very near future.
